What if GM did go bankrupt? How would our world change? Would it?
I think it would and change dramatically. GM is too deeply entrenched in our world for its demise not to be felt. The shame of it is they do make a good product. Rick Wagoner was at the helm for almost 9 years. In that time they brought some great cars to market from most of their mainstay nameplates. Buick, Chevrolet, Pontiac and Cadillac all have world class vehicles. But for some reason we the public, or more apropriately, you the public has not forgiven GM for past mistakes or you still believe what the media tells you what a good car is. By the way did you hear about the recent JD Powers survey released last week in the area of vehicle reliability. Know which brand is #1? Buick, followed by Jaguar (Ford) and in third place Lexus. How come the press didn't wave that all over the news? But if it was something made by someone other than the big 3 guaranteed it would have received coverage.
Remember this. GM is a large part of our manufacturing base; or what's left of it. We lose them and well, we may be lost.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.
