There were riots following the shooting of a teenager in December of '08, but all has been calm since then. And even during the rioting, no tourists were hurt or even came near the centers of conflict. Your client should be fine but as always they or you should check the travel warnings at the State Department website before traveling anywhere. The travel warnings at the Australian State Department are an excellent resource, and usually have a higher level of detail than do the US State Department warnings.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.
