Renting a Vacation Apartment in Manhattan

Two couples are coming to new York City in October for about 4 to 7 days. We would like to stay in our own Manhattan apartment.  Would appreciate any help you can give.  Thanks. Always enjoy your sunday show on WOR.

Charles

Hi Charles,

I think you and your friends are pretty darn smart to be considering an apartment rental for your stay in New York City. While most of the hotels in the city are clustered in frenetic business districts, renting an apartment will allow you to live, for a short time, as a local, in a pleasant residential neighborhood. Just for the restaurant choices alone, it's a better option.

But that's not the only reason why you're wise to consider apartments. You'll have much more room to spread out and you'll likely spend less than you would, per night, to rent two hotel rooms. Luckily, you're staying four nights, which is the usual minimum for apartment rentals.

While many travelers go to "direct to owner websites" such as Zonder.com, Rentalo.com and VRBO.com I think the better course of action is to contact a local agency. That way you'll know that:
The offers you're fielding are legitimate (there have been some reports of apartment rental scams in NYC on Craig's List)
The apartment you're renting has been inspected and will come with a minimum of necessary amenities (like towels, pots and pans, flatware, etc)
And most importantly: that the agency will move you if you have any problems
There are a number of fine rental companies in the city, but for the quality of their service and the variety of their listings, I'm partial to Affordable New York City (www.affordablenewyorkcity.com). Two excellent runners up are City Sonnet (www.citysonnet.com) and NY Habitat (www.nyhabitat.com).

For those of our listeners who live in NYC and would like to make a bit of extra cash either renting out your full apartment or a room within your apartment (the latter is called a private B&B stay), you may wish to contact these companies as well, for advice on how to get started.

Have a wonderful time in the Big Apple!

Cordially,

Pauline Frommer

Marathon Miracle

In a previous blog, “A Runners Wife” I spoke about my husband training for the NYC marathon. All I have to say is that the months of training all came together of an amazing race. Race day is a grueling day for runners, and the family. But a miracle happened...

Pray for Us

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.

Great food matched with lovely wines

Here is a list of wines all from Spain, and menus from restaurants in Brooklyn where a crew of us  did a food / wine crawl through Carrol Gardens and Williamsburg recently
