My husband insisted that I give Sadie, the dog, a 14th birthday party inviting her favorite dog friend Bentley, a very hungry Springer Spaniel, and his human parents. The big hit for the humans at the party lunch was the birthday cake, a simple raspberry buttermilk cake adopted from this month’s (June 2009) Gourmet magazine. The dogs ignored the cake, the corn bread, and the poached chicken salad and opted for Purina One.
