On Bermuda, Windjammer Sailing and the Hill Towns Outside Rome
Sometimes we get such intriguing, helpful letters from listeners, that I just want to share them. So without further ado, here is one I got yesterday. I've put in a couple of comments at the bottom of the paragraphs with my own thoughts. Cheers! Pauline Frommer
Dear Arthur & Pauline,
I so enjoy your show. A couple of weeks ago you spoke of hill towns in Lazio. A couple of years ago, while our son was living in Rome, he was on his was to a concert in Frascati when a young woman told him of another event further up the line in Rocca di Papa. Well, he befriended a family there and visited several times. Once was for their chestnut festival. He took us there when we visited him for Christmas 2007. What an amazing vertical old town built in the rocks.
(From Pauline: The hill towns surrounding Rome are overlooked gems. Recently, we had author David Farley on the show to talk about the hill town of Calcatta. When the Italian government decided to depopulate it in the 1960's a number of hippies and artists moved in and they still live there today. Apparently, it's a wonderfully artsy community, filled with galleries and excellent restaurants, all set in gorgeous historic homes).
Last Sunday you had a listener missing the Windjammer cruises. My cousin,John Eginton is captain of the Mystic Whaler (now sailing out of New London). They offer 3-5 day sails on the Whaler. Though not the Caribbean, the experiences are wonderful. You might check out their website at Mysticwhaler.com. John might even know of something in the Caribbean for the winter. Years ago, he apprenticed with Windjammer.
(From Pauline: This paragraph references the Windjammer Barefoot Cruise company that, sadly, went out of business about a year ago. Though there are few affordable tall ships in the Caribbean anymore, the Windjammers off the coast of New England still take tourists about 4 months of the year. Most leave from the Rockland area of Maine).
Lastly, I haven't been to Bermuda for many years but have so many fond memories. My mother and aunt rented several homes there. Back in the day, I was working for United Airlines and could travel first class on Pan Am & AA every chance I got for long visits. I'm glad Bermuda is unlike other tourist islands. Hopefully, it still has some "class" that is so missing from much of the world today.
In a previous blog, “A Runners Wife” I spoke about my husband training for the NYC marathon. All I have to say is that the months of training all came together of an amazing race. Race day is a grueling day for runners, and the family. But a miracle happened...
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.
