Over the weekend, daughter Liz and I decided that we would take a road trip to the charming community of Rhinebeck New York. They are famous for their antique and craft fairs, sheep shearing contests and the like. Lizzy’s navigator lady was a little off her game, her GSP voice sent us through the state of New Jersey to get to our destination. Or first stop was a delicious lunch at GiGi’s right off Rt 9 in Rhinebeck. The best frittatas, Tuscan fries, homemade soups and paper thin pizza. It was unexpectedly delicious. Cousin Doug the movie maker, his friend Catherine and super-sized sheep dog Jackson joined us. Then we were off to the fair grounds where we all bought something.
Business was not booming, and according to the dealers it is a sign of our times. I collect lions and as a surprise Liz found for me a 1920 gentle lion door knocker. Apple picking was the last event of our Rhinebeck adventure. Pretty well picked out, but we were like children frolicking through the hills armed with apple picking polls to reach the prizes at the top of the trees. We filled our bags and our stomachs.
Getting home was no laughing matter, four hours on the New York State Thruway. At least our stash of apples kept us consoled. Applesauce is on the agenda for tonight.
