Goldstar.com
My friend Bob loves to go out and try new things. He’s always talking about a concert he’s been to or a dance event. It turns out, that he’s been getting half price tickets to all of these great events, so he doesn’t mind trying something even if he’s not sure if he’s going to like it. The secret is goldstar.com. It’s a website that offers half-price tickets to events in 8 cities around the county. Every week, there are 700-900 different events. These range from theater, dance, comedy, concerts, sporting events even spa treatments and networking events. So far, they are in NY, LA, Las Vegas, Chicago, DC, Boston and San Francisco and San Diego. So, even if you are traveling, you can log in to get discounts on events wherever you are.
Membership is free, but you pay a small service charge (around $4.50) for each ticket. Once you sign up, you get weekly emails with a customized list of events in your area that you may like based on your preferences and previous buying history. You can also just go onto goldstar.com to see the full list and there are over 800,000 members now. A lot of their members are in their thirties, looking to try new things.
In New York, some of the venues include NY Philharmonic, Jazz at Lincoln Center, NY Knicks, Roundabout Theater and Carnegie Hall. Unlike Stubhub where you have to go pick up your tickets, here you order online and pick up at the venue. This week, some of the events listed include Carrie Fisher’s new play, Wishful Drinking usually $116.50 selling for $59, the London Symphony Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall normally $70—only $35 here, the Big Apple Circus for $30 and the Knicks for $20. Even the 2009 Cook Eat Drink Live Festival is $39.Even some haunted house events.
It’s also nice because there are reviews only by people who are confirmed that they bought tickets, so you know that they actually attended. You can see how many people attended the event and what the rating they gave it and comments on what to wear, parking, nearby food.
Zydeco Music in NY
One of the best weddings that I've ever been to was on New Year's Eve in Louisiana in the Bayou country. The best part was the music and the dancing. So, I was excited to hear that right here on West 45th street, there is live Zydeco music and dance lessons. It's not every week, but last weekend and this Sunday at Connolly's there's going to be a dance lesson at 6pm and live music from 7-11pm. Admission is $22. A friend went last weekend and said that it's very lively. No pressure. Anyone can go even if you are alone or you don't know how to dance. If you are a real fan of the music, take a look at letszydeco.com with listings of events all around the city.
