This time of year the wine world come to Manhattan to celebrate and promote their brands and regions. This month has been Rioja month as well as a month long celebration of wines and foods from the Sud De France the vast and significant LR wine producing region that runs from the border with Spain north east past Montpellier.
Also on duty were the folks from Champagne Charles Heidsieck. As many of you now I'm a fan of Champagne and have often advised drinking the good stuff with meals not just before them. I also champion that idea of decanting Champagne, and drinking it from wine glasses as opposed to traditional flutes. The folks at Heidsieck agree, and we had a tasting at the Astor center with the famed cellar master / head winemaker Regis Camus and Max Riedel of the famed Riedel glass company based in Austria the inventors of varietal specific wine glasses.
Together we all sampled their Brut Reserve NV, the Rose Reserve NV, the Blanc des Millenaires 1995 decanted, and the absolutely amazing and extremely rare Champagne Charlie vintage 1981, which was perhaps the best Champagne I've tasted in years. Later that night we had a lovely Champagne only dinner at Park Avenue Winter where the bubbly worked perfectly with the food.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.
