Brooklyn Flea
I love a good flea market. You never know what you’re going to find. So, on a beautiful fall Sunday we headed across the Brooklyn bridge into DUMBO to check out the Brooklyn Flea. It’s a great location-lots going on in DUMBO. The market itself was lively and very neighborhood with lots of dogs, children and people catching up. I wouldn’t say there were any spectacular finds the day we were there except for the food. But there are over 100 vendors and I think it really depends on the day. I’ve heard rave reviews from people. In fact, supposedly, Martha Stewart was there the day we were to tape part of her TV show.
One of the best discoveries of the day was the fresh Maine Lobster roll. (Martha had one too) There’s a place called Red Hook Lobster Pound that supplies fresh lobster rolls, lobster grits and bisque every Saturday and Sunday. The roll is buttered and freshly grilled on the grill so it’s nice and hot. One of the owners drives to Maine once a week on Wednesdays to pick up the fresh lobsters, then drives back to NY and sells them over the weekend. Friday nights 28 through mid-December (then back in January if the lobstermen are still fishing) they are serving them up at Rocky Sullivan's in Red Hook, corner of Dwight and 34 Van Dyke Street. Lobsters will be served between 6 and 9pm. They are boiling the lobsters up right in the courtyard. $25.00 gets you a 1½ lb. lobster, farm fresh corn, coleslaw or potato salad. Lobstah Feast Fridays are first-come first served, however, parties of 6 or more are only seated subject to reservation availability. Please email redhooklobster@gmail.com for parties of 6 or more. They also have a retail location where they are selling over the weekend—only when the lobsters come in. Lobsters whole are $9.75 a pound. The retail location is 284 Van Brunt Street. Only open: Friday 12pm – 6 pm, Saturday 12pm –6pm, Sunday 12pm-6pm. Call (646) 326-7650 or email redhooklobster@gmail.com to place an order or to join the weekly mailing list.

Brooklyn Larder
One other stop in Brooklyn-- a new gourmet store in Park Slope. It’s a great looking store with a nice variety of interesting cheeses (including one from our old part of Vermont-- Putney) It’s not a huge selection, but everything is unique. Lots of cheese, olive oils and fresh pasta from Italy and homemade sandwiches. It seems like it’s the next best thing to a Zabars in Brooklyn although without the hustle and bustle.

In a previous blog, “A Runners Wife” I spoke about my husband training for the NYC marathon. All I have to say is that the months of training all came together of an amazing race. Race day is a grueling day for runners, and the family. But a miracle happened...
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.
Here is a list of wines all from Spain, and menus from restaurants in Brooklyn where a crew of us did a food / wine crawl through Carrol Gardens and Williamsburg recently
