Marathon Miracle

In a previous blog, “A Runners Wife” I spoke about my husband training for the NYC marathon. All I have to say is that the months of training all came together of an amazing race. Race day is a grueling day for runners, and the family. It started with bringing my husband to the Meadowland at 5:30am to board a bus to the starting line in Staten Island. It was followed by bringing the kids into the city, walking from West to East and back again. We did get to see him run at mile 17 and 24. I cannot tell you the excitement that comes over you when you see someone you know running with the thousands of others. I screamed, and cried and jumped up and down like a kid. Seeing him in a race that he hard trained so hard for was thrilling.

He did fantastic, and broke the coveted 4 hour mark. He cut 23 minutes off his previous best marathon run; Three hours, Fifty-three minutes and sixteen seconds! I know I did not run, but I was there every second of the way with him. I still tear up when I think about his accomplishment.

The week after the marathon was my birthday, and all I am going to say it was the one before a BIG one! I am not sure if it was the fear of another decade of my life drawing near or the inspiration of the 40,000 runners pounding the pavement in front of my eyes, but I week later I decided to start running. I have no ambition to run a marathon, but I would like to run without passing out! So I put myself on a 10 week training program (this is my Marathon Miracle.) The goal is to be able to run 30 minutes without stopping. At this point I am doing a combination of running and walking---building up to more running and less walking. Let’ see how long this lasts!
