"I was sitting in traffic and the temp gauge went into the red. Then there was a cloud of smoke and PUUFF it erupted. Do you think I did any damage. Oh, and by the way I checked and there is no oil on the engine dipstick".

Listen, as electronically laden and computerized as vehicles are today they still need basic fluid, filters and common sense under the hood. The more you abuse the vehicle the more expensive it is to repair and maintain. That should be a given. Do yourself a favor. Maintain your car. And please don't ask the mechanic after a failure such as this if they think you did some damage? That's like saying you might be a little bit pregant. Either you are or you're not.
