Jersey City Police Officer Killed

The gunman who killed a Jersey City police officer claimed he was “going to be famous.”

Moments before Officer Melvin Santiago was shot and killed, Lawrence Campbell delivered the chilling message to a witness.

“Surveillance cameras show Campbell walked outside and speaking to a witness,” Mayor Steven Fulop said.  “At which time he apologized for his conduct in Walgreens and subsequently told the witness to watch the news later today, he’s going to be famous.”

Police were called to the Walgreens on Communipaw Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard around 4 a.m. yesterday morning after reports of an armed robbery.  Campbell allegedly walked into the store with a knife, assaulted a security guard and stole his gun, and then waited for police to arrive.

As the 23 year old Santiago was stepping out of his police vehicle, he was shot in the head and killed.  Campbell fired a few more rounds before he was shot dead by police.

Santiago was a rookie cop who graduated from the police academy in December.  He’s the first Jersey City police officer killed in the line of duty in 4 years.

Campbell was wanted in connection with a homicide.
