We are all connected. Not by genes or culture, but by electronics. The Internet now connects the entire world. Security of the Internet has come into question in recent past. Tom Kellermann joined John Gambling to discuss the recent cyber security breaches that have affected the nation.
John Gambling’s first question was, “ Should we be worried.” Kellermann responded with, “You should be worried.” There is much to gain from cyber crimes and little risk of getting caught. Kellermann stated that less than one percent of all cyber crimes are prosecuted. The main concern is how these cyber attackers get into a person’s computer. A cyber hacker has the ability to access secure information through computers and mobile phones. They use the Wifi connection to computers that lack security to access financial and personal information. The goal of cyber hackers is to colonize as many computers as possible to generate the most profit.
Kellermann did have some suggestions as to how to best defend against hackers. The first suggestion was to always update operating systems and passwords. This will keep a person’s computer the best protected it can be. Many companies have not made cyber security a priority. The businesses that were recently attacked, such as Citibank, have now made cyber security a major priority. Kellermann suggests that when dealing with companies online make sure cyber security is a key issue. These companies will have personal and financial information that can be accessed by hackers if security is weak. Keller also recommended that when receiving emails do not click on links or download attachments. Even if the emails are from aquantaices it can potentially be a virus sent from their email, unknown to them.
The Internet is, at current, an open place. Much information is front doored, but it is Kellermann’s belief that sixty percent of all activity on the computer is backdoored. These hackers are not trying to breakdown and destroy the Internet, but control it and the lives of the people who use it.
