Joan Hamburg Interviews Dr. Urvashi Rangan of Consumer's Union

LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW

Joan speaks with Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Senior Scientist and Policy Analyst for Consumer’s Union, about the recent restrictions lifted by the Food and Drug Administration on fish consumption for pregnant women. Dr. Rangan is highly concerned for the vulnerable public that the consumption of certain fish such as tuna which contains high amounts of mercury is now being encouraged by the FDA. Joan and Urvashi questioned why the FDA would pass this so late into the Bush administration and wonder whether lobbyist are pushing this for fish corporations. This is serious issue and Dr. Rangan feels that people should speak up before the White House agrees with the FDA on this.

The consumption of mercury can be dangerous during pregnancy since this neurotoxin has the potential to harm a child’s neurological system development during and after birth. Dr. Rangan warns of the high mercury content in fish such as swordfish, mackerel, shark, and tuna fish. Women though can receive the essential fatty acid Omega 3 found in fish by consuming wild salmon, tilapia, sardines, and scallops which all contain less mercury then the fish listed above. Joan and Urvashi urge people to contact the Food and Drug Administration and their Congressman to speak up on the issue so that the White House does not back this decision.
