I recently talked to one of my friends who lost everything in the Bernie Madoff scandal. She was not a woman of great wealth, worked hard most of her adult life, and had accumulated some money from selling her apartment. Far wealthier friends as a “favor” offered to invest her money with theirs in “Uncle Bernie’s” empire. She reminded me the Madoff’s had become friends over the past 6 or 7 years and that I had met him at her birthday dinner. As traumatic as losing her money is, she regarded him as a friend. She has almost nothing left and pointed out that it is too late to start over. Were to go, what to do and how do you afford a lawyer when you have no money. She is only one of the thousands of stories being told all over the world. Meanwhile the Madoff’s , even after violating the conditions of their “at home confinement,” have again been given the opportunity to remain at home rather than in jail….were many of us believe he belongs.
