Many years ago when I was covering another inauguration, I went over to the Lincoln Memorial were Martin Luther King’s father was giving his son’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The crowd was big, but nothing compared to what we have already seen take place in Washington over the past few days. I thought to myself, Martin Luther King Jr., and his Dad dreamt it but could they ever believe it would happen? As a parent, watching Barack Obama yesterday address over 500,000 people in front of the Lincoln memorial I kept thinking what a tragedy his mother and grandmother were not there to share in this moment; and that Dr. King himself could not be witness to it all. How significant is it that Barack Obama will become President the day after we celebrate what would have been the 80th birthday of the man who began the journey so that every race could live in this country without fear? We shall soon see.
