Orangetown Sends Huge Bill To Library For Light Bulbs


Dozens of new light bulbs at the Orangeburg Library are the cause of a dispute between the library and the town of Orangetown. Library officials say the town's energy-efficiency contractor recently showed up at the library to change 42 light bulbs to energy-efficient ones, although no one from the town consulted with library officials for the operation.  A short time later, the library received an 18-thousand dollar bill for the bulbs, with a letter from the town saying it had to pay.

Ex-NYC top cop allowed out of jail for holidays


Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner and one-time candidate for Homeland Security chief, was freed from jail Tuesday for the holidays to await sentencing on federal crimes.Kerik, who pleaded guilty last week to eight felonies,  was released on $1.5 million bond by federal Judge Stephen Robinson after the former top cop spent three weeks in jail.

Somerville, NJ  --  Former NBA star Jayson Williams is expected to take a plea deal in his reckless manslaughter case tomorrow and will serve time in prison. Poll: New Yorkers worry about deficit, blame lawmakers


A new poll shows New Yorkers are worried about the state's growing deficit. They believe Gov. David Paterson when he says the state will run out of money in December. And they overwhelmingly blame the Legislature for inaction so far on the $3.2 billion gap. The Marist College poll finds 70 percent of registered voters say lawmakers are responsible for failing to address the problem, while 21 percent blame Paterson.

Paterson: No deficit deal imminent


Gov. David Paterson, who has tried for weeks to get the Legislature to address a $3.2 billion deficit, now says he doesn't expect any action on Tuesday, his latest target date. The Democrat also tells The Associated Press that he will continue to compel the Legislature to meet in Albany until it approves spending cuts and new revenue sources he's proposed, or votes them down so voters can see where each lawmaker stands.

Police Say Sexual Harassment On The Rise In Subway System


More women are getting groped and flashed while riding the subway. Police report incidents of sex offenses on the subway system is on the rise.  NYPD Transit Bureau Chief James Hall reports more than 600 complaints were filed with police, up four-percent from last year.

A wild turkey that has been playing chicken along the New Jersey Turnpike won't have to dodge Thanksgiving traffic.State Fish and Wildlife officials netted the bird Wednesday after failed attempts during the weekend.The turkey has been trotting around toll booths at the 14B interchange in Jersey City since August.Toll collectors began putting road construction cones on their parked cars to prevent the turkey from jumping onto their vehicles.

Space shuttle Atlantis lifts off on supply mission


Space shuttle Atlantis rocketed into orbit Monday with six astronauts and a full load of spare parts for the International Space Station. The supply run should keep the space station humming for years to come, and the shuttle astronauts in space through Thanksgiving. NASA on track for Monday space shuttle launch


NASA has cleared space shuttle Atlantis for liftoff Monday on a trip to stock up the International Space Station with several years' worth of spare parts.Mission managers gave the go-ahead Saturday as forecasters put the odds of good launch weather at 90 percent, about as good as it gets.Atlantis will deliver nearly 30,000 pounds of pumps, storage tanks, gyroscopes and other spare parts, along with six astronauts who will unload everything.

FBI searching backyard of Ohio home with 11 bodies


 FBI agents are digging through the backyard of a Cleveland home where the remains of 11 women have been found.The agents used rakes and shovels Saturday in their search for evidence in the yard of suspected serial killer Anthony Sowell. One agent had a tape measure, while another took pictures and a third marked locations with orange paint.On Friday, the FBI worked at the house next door to Sowell's to do X-rays, thermal imaging and other tests.
