It seems the going phrase these days for cash starved local governments is call Albany. Mayor Bloomberg was telling people that over the weekend as he explained his “draconian” budget proposals. It seems everybody’s has a draconian plan these days. The mayor said the layoff of 14,000 teachers could be avoided if Albany restored the cuts in made to education aid. Sound familiar? The MTA has said its draconian budget with $3 dollar fares and service cuts could be avoided if Albany provides more aid. Nassau County is the latest to put out a draconian budget suggesting it needed more state aid. Union leaders on Long Island and others are saying call Albany and complain. Well we know Albany has its own draconian budget and Governor Paterson is calling on Washington for help. This vicious cycle of call Albany or Washington that unfortunately always ends up with a call to you and me to pay for this. Who do we call to help; it appears our elected officials are not answering the phone.
