Flying Without A Net

info@raauto.com

This past weekend I went to a Christmas party. Sure I know its a little late, since this is February, but hey someone asked so off I went. I drove up with some friends to Montville, NJ; The Conklin Farm, better known as Dead Man's Curve. A very interesting and exciting place, there are old hot rods and engines of all sizes and types spread out over the area. Inside the large garage, I think it was about 5 bays, there are even more collectibles and very neat old hot rod parts from days gone by. A great time and a nice break in the middle of winter, I understood why it was such a popular event. But there was something even bigger in store for me on the way home

.

It turns out another friend of mine, John, was there with his Model A Ford truck. You saw the picture on the blog page. Small block Chevy, straight as arrow , handles like its on rails and FAST!!! It flys like you would expect a hot rod should. Here's another shot. John was leaving early so I jumped at the opportunity to ride shotgun home with him. Now I have to tell, I have driven and ridden in my share of hot rods and fast cars BUT this was something all together special. There is no speedometer in this hot rod. There are some gauges for the usual stuff; oil pressure, charging system and gas gauge among them and a tachometer. As John says " you don't need to know how fast you're going. Drive till it feels good". Well, let me tell you, first time in a long time we passed the 18 wheelers on Route 287 like they were standing still. Oh, and one more thing. John had the headers unplugged. So there we were flying up 287 at, oh, I have to say about 90 or better and it was a great day to be alive. The roar of the pipes, the rush of air through your hair and the smell of exhaust. It doesn't get any better than that. Except for the thumbs up we got from everyone as we passed them by. Seems like everyone, and I mean everyone, loves a hot rod. Even the cops. We passed 2 state troopers and one local as they had cars pulled over on the side of the road. John back off the gas and we coasted past in reasonable silence without so much as a second look. And then again if we did get pulled over and the cop asked "do you know how fast you were going?" we could have answered honestly. After all, a speedometer was an option John didn't bother to install. Vroom to you and yours, see ya on radio....

Marathon Miracle

In a previous blog, “A Runners Wife” I spoke about my husband training for the NYC marathon. All I have to say is that the months of training all came together of an amazing race. Race day is a grueling day for runners, and the family. But a miracle happened...

Pray for Us

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.

Great food matched with lovely wines

Here is a list of wines all from Spain, and menus from restaurants in Brooklyn where a crew of us  did a food / wine crawl through Carrol Gardens and Williamsburg recently
