West Side Story

LISTEN TO THE REVIEW

The world is a different world from the fifties when” West Side Story” came to life on Broadway. As a recent article in the New York Times pointed out bilingual public schools, a city with a majority of minorities, Spanish language TV stations plus five radio stations are part of the landscape. No more fighting over turf. Today, turf is a high-rise fancy apartments. To keep it fresh Tony award winner and author of the musical Arthur Laurents has the Puerto Rican characters speak and sing in Spanish including everyone’s favorite “I Feel Pretty.” The young Argentinean actress, singer and dancer Josefina Scaglione is lovely, but the scene-stealer is Karen Olivi as Anita. Who can resist the rich glorious score and the talented cast? “West Side Story” is more than ever a love story!
