Irena's Vow, which moved from a small theater downtown, had its Broadway opening last night at the Walter Kerr Theater. This is a true story about a young Polish women who saved the lives of a dozen Jews and a new born by hiding them in the basement of a Villa belonging to a prominent Nazi major. Irena Gut Updike, the young women played by Tova Fleshy, is the housekeeper for Major Ruggeder, who is secretly falling in love with her.
The 90- minute no intermission play takes us through one crisis after another, life and death decisions, and lots of strum and drama -all true.
If you go to the wall in Jerusalem “honoring the righteous” she is right up there. Bring lots of hankies. It is a real tearjerker and Tova who goes from older women to a 20 something -is a great performer.
