Hi Pauline and Arthur!
I have learned very much about travel from your show, but I had not heard anything about travel to India.
My 21-year-old daughter wants to travel to India in June, visiting Indian friends in Bangalore and Delhi. We (her parents) are concerned about safety and health. Do you have any advice?
Thanks
Irene
Dear Irene,
India is one of my favorite destinations. Yes, it was targeted by terrorists not that long ago, but so were Madrid, London and New York in the not-so-distant past. And you don't hear pundits suggesting you avoid those places, do you? I don't think the recent attacks should dissuade your daughter from going, especially because she'll be staying with friends and not in the huge, multi-national hotel chains that were targeted. The statistical probability of being caught in a terrorist act, even in exotic places like India, is about on a par with the probability of being hit by lightening.
As for health: yes, a lot of visitors to India wind up with so-called "Delhi Belly". It hit my husband on our last trip there, and he was miserable for several days. So, while in India, it's important that she avoid drinking the water or eating any raw items that might have been washed in local water (such as salads or fresh fruits). As well, she should check with her local doctor about what innoculations are currently being recommended for travel to India. If her doctor doesn't know, suggest that he go to
www.cdc.gov for a list.
Bottom line: This could be the trip of a lifetime for your daughter. She has an opportunity to explore this fascinating country in the company of locals who will introduce her to experiences and sights most tourists never even know to look for. I know it's hard not to worry (that's one of the primary skills of mothering, after all!), but try not to let your anxieties spoil her trip. Best,
Pauline Frommer
