New York City Is Still Assessing the Situation, Precautions Have Been Taken

Linda Gibbs, NYC Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services joined The John Gambling Show to provide the latest information on the Swine Flu in NYC.

Deputy Mayor Gibbs said the latest on the swine flu (H1N1) in NY is 49 confirmed cases, mostly associated with St. Francis Prep but a number of other cases are being investigated right now. What needs to be decided is this a real concern or is the flu running its natural course. Hundreds have gotten the flew, but it has been mild and they are recovering - just what is expected when there is a normal flu outbreak.

Gibbs added that school closures in the City are being assessed right now - only St. Francis Prep and PS 177 (a special needs school) that are closed. The situation here in NY is much different that the situation that has been publicly reported in Mexico, so the actions taken there is not merited here in New York. The bottom line is that it is a flu and cautions have be taken and that people here in the City can take as well.

Finally, Deputy Mayor Gibbs said that Mayor Bloomberg and Health Commissioner Tom Frieden have provided all the information to the public as they have come across it and will continue to do so in the coming days.
