Vanessa Williams: The Real Thing

         LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW:

Singer and actress Vanessa Williams has a full schedule between filming episodes for ABC’s Ugly Betty and being a mom. However, her passion for music has allowed her time to produce her new album called The Real Thing

Williams unexpectedly received the role as Ugly Betty’s Wilhelmina. She had just lost her father and was out of the country and therefore was unprepared to play the role. However, her talent pulled her through and Ugly Betty is now going onto their fourth season. The show, which has a different premise than most TV shows caught Williams attention which is why she took the role as the character who she describes as strong and ambitious. “You love to hate her”, Williams said during her appearance on The Joan Hamburg Show on WOR710 HD.

In her 25th year of fame, Williams believes that success is the best revenge in the world. This is due to the support she had from her family. “I am so lucky to have the foundation I did”, said Williams about her parents who supported her completely after she told them what she aspired to be.  Despite the tragedy she faced in her life, Williams said it does not change who you are, and it does not change your talent or essence, but it does make you stronger.

While filming Ugly Betty consumes most of Williams day since it takes 10 days to film a one hour episode, producing a CD is much different. Even though it takes Williams one day to complete a song, she said it took her about two years to complete the entire album. This is because she waited to work with the same producer she has used for years who helped her with five songs on this album. Williams also took time deciding what songs would be on the CD which features a variety of music including Brazilian, R&B, pop and jazz. However, in between getting everyone’s schedules to match up along with timing and gathering musicians Williams finally completed the album.

What the future holds for Williams is unknown. She said she would love to return to the stage when Ugly Betty is over. However, her life now revolves around work and being a mom to her beloved children.
