Time is ever haunting. At any age, you can experience feelings of nostalgia for easier days: days when the simplest of things could make you smile, days before you experienced the death of a loved one, days before your mobility became hampered by joint pain. When you begin to feel the pressures of time weighing down on you, it may be very dificult to cope with.
However, there are ways to reduce feelings of sadness and loss. First and foremost, keep active. Whether its going for a walk, joining a book club, or visiting old friends, getting out of the house is highly beneficial to fighting off the blues. Moreover, finding the causes to your depression will only help to find the cures. For example, the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies claims,
"If you are sad about the loss of someone you love, and you experience pangs of sadness every time you glance at the photo album that is filled with pictures of your loved one, it is time to put the album in the attic. Or, is it simply seeing the ashtray she used or her favorite chair that fills you with melancholy? Then put it away."
Nothing productive can be accomplished by living in the past - nothing can be changed. Though it sometimes can be very hard to jut your mind away from such painfully precious memories, it is important to remember not to let these memories take control of your present life.
The Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies has a very helpful website geared towards helping people age gracefully. They cover all aspects of aging - the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual issues that develop as people age.
