NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A former executive of a Canadian company that disposes of contaminated soil has pleaded guilty in a fraud scheme related to the cleanup of a New Jersey Superfund site.
The U.S. Justice Department announced Monday that Robert P. Griffiths of Toronto, Canada, admitted he inflated prices he charged to a prime contractor and paid kickbacks to its employees.
The fraud involved contracts for cleanup of the Federal Creosote Superfund site in Manville.
Griffiths worked for Bennett Environmental Inc., of Oakville, Ontario. The company pleaded guilty in the fraud conspiracy in December and was fined $1 million.
Griffiths faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the fraud conspiracy.
