Dr. Martha Gillis, Aunt of Lieutenant Brian Bradshaw, wrote a letter to the Washington Post pointing out that her nephew died on the same day as Michael Jackson, who was then receiving wall to wall media coverage surrounding his death while not a word was mentioned of the servicemen and women who were killed defending their country. Her letter focused on the growing concern of many families and individuals that the deaths of United States military servicemen and women seemed to be going unheard.
Dr. Gillis wrote the letter in frustration, not that the loss of Michael Jackson was not important as it was still a loss to the Jackson family and the music community, but that her nephew gave his life to his country. It is that difference in sacrifice that has led her to reach out to media outlets, such as she did on the Steve Malzberg Show, to ensure that her nephew and the service he did for his country and for the many Americans he affected directly or indirectly does not go unheard. She points out that it is clear from the success of numerous American military films about World War II and Vietnam, that there is an interest in the service of these young men and women soldiers who serve their country. If Americans will make the effort to support the troops in any way they can, the military men and women will not feel forgotten and can be more at ease overseas, knowing that things at home are being taken care of in their absence and that their efforts aren't in vain.
