WOR News

Listen for updates from the WOR Newsroom at the top of every hour - and twice an hour during The WOR Morning Show!

Here are the faces behind some of the voices in our news reports!

Dara Welles
Dara Welles is the WOR newsroom coordinator and anchor on WOR. She was asked to join the radio station after impressing her bosses with the ability to climb 23 flights of stairs in the dark while covering the August 2004 blackout. Dara was previously a fill-in news anchor for WQXR, and hosted talk shows on WABC, WNYC and NBC’s TalkNet. Dara prefers radio to television, because she doesn’t have to report for “hair and make-up”. But she has anchored and hosted programs for both local and national TV, including CNN and Long Island public station WLIW21. Dara loves being part of the “WOR Morning Show” and hopes someday to get used to going to bed at 8 o’ clock at night.

Shelley Strickler
Shelly Strickler thought she retired from WOR in 2003 after 25 years of award winning anchoring and reporting. But she couldn't stay away and is now back delivering the news with the intelligence, style and the information her listeners have come to expect.  Shelly has been both anchor and reporter at WOR, covering the major news stories including special coverage of the 1984 and 1992 Democratic Conventions, Pope John Paul's 1979 and 1995 visits, the return of the hostages held in Iran in 1981 and the riveting trials of the last quarter century.  Over the years, Shelly has won more than 50 awards for anchoring and reporting, including several from the New York State Associated Press, New York State Broadcasters Association, and New York Press Club.  Before joining WOR in 1979, Shelly worked as a newscaster/reporter for WCTC New Brunswick, New Jersey and WGNY Newburgh, New York.  She is a proud member of the New York Press Club and Director of the Inner Circle, an organization of reporters who present a musical extravaganza political spoof each year for local charities.  She lives in Brooklyn with her husband Larry, and has three daughters and nine grandchildren.

Dave Spencer
Dave Spencer has been a regular part of the award winning WOR news team for over a decade. He also wrote for the Emmy Award winning "Ten O' Clock" on Channel 5 for over 20 years and still found time to anchor and report the news for legendary stations like WNEW-AM, WHN, WABC, and KYW all news in Philadelphia. Dave is an avid fan of movies from Hollywood's Golden Age, and an expert on documentaries form John Grierson to the present. Dave and his wife Barbara and dog Woodrow divide their time between Manhattan and Vermont.

Karen Stewart
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Karen Stewart is a veteran air talent in New York City radio.  She’s been on many morning radio shows, including Fox News, The Jim Kerr Rock and Roll Morning Show, The Dave Herman Rock and Roll Morning Show, Jim Kerr and The Morning Crew, The Ed Baer Affair, Mickey Dolenz in the Morning and Howard Stern.  Karen is an accomplished News Anchor, a seasoned voiceover artist, and an experienced Disc Jockey.  She has worked on-air and on television in New York with classic rockers too numerous to mention.

Karen is a Horror Movie freak (the bloodier the better), loves Dario Argento and worships Herschell Gordon Lewis.  Karen loves the combo of creativity paired with a depraved idea.  She thinks KISS is the greatest Rock and Roll band of our time….but don’t hold that against her.

Each of these News Anchors is supported by a small army of reporters, editors, desk assistants and engineers to bring you news you can rely on. The WOR Radio News department has earned the respect of its peers over the years and has won countless awards from them. All of it to bring you up to the minute information you need throughout the day.
