Mauritania Election

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) - The man who led last year's coup in Mauritania has officially won the presidency in weekend elections, the Constitutional Court said late Thursday - just hours after the head of the election commission resigned over doubts about the ballot.

Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who had resigned as junta leader to run in the elections, received 52.47 percent of Saturday's vote, according to the court. The final count matched preliminary results given Sunday.

The victory came with controversy, however, as the election commission chief Sid'Ahmed Ould Dey, saying complaints filed with both court and the commission "have sown doubts in my mind about the reliability of the election."

He said, however, that he had no proof of irregularities in the vote, which international observers had said was free of major problems.

The court also dismissed an opposition motion arguing that the vote was unfair and the results should be thrown out. Judge Abdallahi Ould Ely Salem said "the court did not find in its investigation anything to prove their allegations."

Saturday's election represented a chance for the West African desert nation to resurrect billions of dollars in pledged international aid that was frozen after Aziz led the coup ousting democratically elected President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi in August. Restarting that aid will be no easy task: Aziz will first have to convince skeptical donors that democracy has really been restored.

Aziz' election challengers - Parliament Speaker Messaoud Ould Boulkheir, opposition party leader Ahmed Ould Daddah and another challenger Ely Ould Mohamed Vall - denounced the weekend election as a "massive fraud."

Daddah accused Aziz of committing an "electoral coup." The election results put Boulkheir in second place and Daddah in third.

Politics Got You Crazy- Why Not Cook

Sarah Palin dominate the airwaves, making fun of President Obama’s use of the teleprompter, than using the palm of her hand as a cheat sheet for a Tea Party political talk, made me want to eat chocolate pudding!    You just have to laugh at what politics are about today.   My son told me that he is taking “Boot Camp” cooking classes to relieve stress. ...

Excuse Me, But You’re In My Rut

Hey! Who’s this guy in my seat on the train? Never seen him before. I’ve seen everyone else…from the kindle readers to the guy whose wristwatch beeps every morning at 6:30am for no apparent reason. I even know that he won’t turn it off…it just beeps for a minute and re-sets. What’s up with that?

The Chemistry of Love

With Valentines’ Day around the corner, I thought it might be apropos to offer a run-down of the biochemical changes that occur when we’re in love.  Or, stated otherwise, what’s the formula for Love Potion Number Nine?
