WOR HISTORY
WOR joined the airwaves on February 22, 1922. It began as a promotional effort to help Bambergers Department store sell their stock of the newly invented wireless radio. Little did the owners of the store know that WOR would go on to be an innovator in this new medium. Over the years, the station, which now broadcasts lower Manhattan, has been on the cutting edge of both technology and programming.
WOR was the first station in the country to use a directional antenna to increase the scope and range of its broadcast, the first American Station to broadcast from London, the first station to air a special Christmas show, and the first station on the east coast to produce news casts specifically for the air waves. WOR’s policies and programming during WW2 were held up as an example of excellence in wartime broadcasting. WOR is also the first AM radio station in New York to broadcast with the new HD technology.
