Governor Paterson Sets Tone Early For Special Session
(Albany, NY) -- Governor Paterson warned state lawmakers not to soak New Yorkers any further as the state faces a two-point-one-billion-dollar deficit.
The governor says the state Legislature should brace to make very tough decisions when a budget cutting session convenes this fall. Governor Paterson says state leaders have, quote, "Raised enough fees, and I think we've raised enough taxes."
The governor initially opposed a so-called millionaire's tax, but later signed off on the tax hike included in the current budget package. T
he Governor, during an event in Suffolk County, said the problems for New York could reach levels seen in California if state lawmakers fail to act.
The governor may be forced to furlough or layoff state workers if no cuts are made.
