It's Swine Flu, Part II. The flu season is on the horizon, just time in time for the start of the school year, and educators in our area are already preparing contingent plans for dealing with the H1N1 virus. The question remains: will it really be worse than the last batch of cases? Patrick McLaughlin, Assistant Principal St. Francis Prep High School in Queens, NY told John Gambling that the school has been working very closely with the CDC and Mayor Bloomberg to get input and advice on what to expect and what to do. A certain amount of anxiety is good said Mclaughlin. However, educating and informing is paramount - so if a student feels sick or ill, stay home! Students who came to school even though they felt a bit under the weather was one of the triggers for the epidemic at St. Francis Prep.
So will the swine flu be striking back? The CDC is unsure says Mclaughlin "but we aren't taking any chances with it - the CDC is stock piling vaccines, St. Francis Prep has been scrubbed down and completely clean and the final step is of course: education and taking precautions. The response from students and parents has been positive says Mclaughlin. Parents are concerned but cooperative and pat believes that this was due to good communication between the school, the students and their parents.
