NEW YORK (AP) - A New York Times reporter taken hostage in Afghanistan said his situation was turning for the worse just as British commandos carried out a raid to free him.
Reporter Stephen Farrell was taken hostage Saturday along with his translator in the northern province of Kunduz.
He was freed early Wednesday. His translator was killed, along with a British commando.
New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller said Farrell told him the situation in the Taliban hideout where he was being held had been getting more menacing.
Keller said he didn't know what triggered the raid, but that it was possible the military had picked up on plans to move the hostages or do something to them.
