NEW YORK (AP) - The Long Island Rail Road has reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with an assistant conductor who fell into the gap between a train and station platform.
Brian Beneville will receive $4 million up front and at least $1.6 million more in the future. He hurt his back and knee.
"Gap" dangers gained attention after the 2006 death of visitor Natalie Smead of Northfield, Minn. The LIRR expects to have most of the problems fixed this year.
The railroad said it settled Beneville's suit because he was hurt on the job and couldn't go back to work.
The suit said Beneville broke up a fight, and was standing at the door to keep it from flaring up again. A passenger pushed him, and he fell.
