By most accounts Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a lock for re-election, but let’s not write off the Democratic candidate Bill Thompson just yet. He may not have the millions to run an ad campaign to match Bloomberg, he doesn’t have the record of achievement that Bloomberg boasts, but the numbers could fall his way, actually just one number: eight.
His supporters chanted, “eight is enough” as he claimed the democratic nomination and that may become the singular issue that could propel him to a long shot victory. Despite all of what Bloomberg has done and his claim that we need him at the helm during these difficult economic times, there may be a sizeable pushback by people who dislike the way Bloomberg and the City Council overturned a voter approved term limit.
While the Mayor will tell you it was the City Council’s decision, we all know better…he was the driving force. At least three incumbent Council members were defeated in primary elections in large part because of voter anger over the term limit vote.
There also seems to be a movement to vote against all incumbents, good or bad, which I strongly.
So be careful Mayor Mike and resist the inclination to dismiss the matter or get snooty about things.
