Joan's Favorite Theater District Restaurants

dewit@nac.net

Theater season is officially starting next week and the emails are coming in fast and furious inquiring as to  where to eat.  Here is a list of some of my favorites.

Becco
355 West 46th Street Bet. 8th & 9th Avenues
(212) 397-7597
Unlimited tableside service of the Chef’s Three Daily Pastas, Insalata Cesare (Becco's version of the classic
Caesar salad, or Antipasto Misto (An assortment of marinated & grilled vegetables with assorted seafood) all for $17.95 for lunch and $22.95 for Dinner

Café Edison
228 W 47th St (inside the Edison Hotel)
(212)-354-0368
Comfort food right in the heart of the Broadway Theater district. The Edison café is famous for its matzoh-ball soup, cheese blintzes, and Broadway celebrities that frequently visit.  Moderate prices make this coffee shop the perfect place for a quick bite, if you can get a table. It was even featured in Sex in the City!

5 NAPKIN BURGER
630 Ninth Ave. (at West 45th Street)
(212) 757-2277
Recent;y opened 5 Napkin Burger, a sibling of the popular  Upper West Side bistro Nice Matin, is a welcome edition to the theater  district dining scene.  Inexpensive offerings like yummy burgers, salads, fries, and even sushi – and the price is right with burger platters that include fries starting at only $11.95.

Cara Mia
654 9th Ave
(212) 262-6767
Little Italian Restaurant with good food and a great  $9.95 tasty price-fixed lunch and a $19.95 price-fixed pre-theater menu.  Pasta here is especially delicious and salads are always fresh.  The only problem is that you have to ask for the “Prix Fix” menu – otherwise they give you the regular one.

Marseille
630 Ninth Ave
(212) 333-2323
Brasserie -with varied menu
Inspired by its namesake French port city, a cultural melting pot that is France's gateway to the Mediterranean. Marseille, the restaurant, has been a proud and integral landmark of the thriving Hell's Kitchen neighborhood since 2001

Kellari Taverna
19 W 44th Street
(212) 221-0144
Real Greek food at its best.
Prix-Fixe Three course lunch $25.95 and dinner only $29.95

Virgil’s Real Barbecue
152 W 44th Street
(212) 921-9494
Good down home  BBQ.   Huge portions, great prices – good for families

Joe Allen Restaurant
326 W 46th Street
(212) 581-6464
Legendary restaurant row mainstay -serving  classic American Food in a relaxed and comfortable setting.  An actor's hangout

John’s  Pizza
260 W 44th St,
(212) 391-7560
Housed in what was a church - Good pizza and red gravy specials - Reasonably priced and perfect for children

Orso
322 West 46th Street
(212) 489-7212
One the most popular restaurants in the neighborhood .  Hard to get a table and for a good reason.  Excellent Italian food and lots of celebrity sightings.

Sardi’s
234 W 44th St
 (212) 221-8440
Sardi's has been the toast of Broadway for 82 years.Known for the hundreds of caricatures.   Great  Cobb salad!

Marathon Miracle

In a previous blog, “A Runners Wife” I spoke about my husband training for the NYC marathon. All I have to say is that the months of training all came together of an amazing race. Race day is a grueling day for runners, and the family. But a miracle happened...

Pray for Us

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.

Great food matched with lovely wines

Here is a list of wines all from Spain, and menus from restaurants in Brooklyn where a crew of us  did a food / wine crawl through Carrol Gardens and Williamsburg recently
