New York Uncovered - Lincoln Center Film Festival

September 25, 2009

NY Film Festival
There are so many wonderful movies in NY, but the Lincoln Center Film Festival gives you a chance to see some unusual movies and often to meet or hear the director and other filmmakers.

This week, the Lincoln Center Film Society debuted Michael Moore’s new movie: Capitalism, a Love Story. Now whether you love him or hate him, Michael Moore is always entertaining and he really truly cares deeply about his subjects. This movie is bound to stir up some controversy, but he’s got some incredible footage including some never-before footage of President Roosevelt announcing what he called the “Second Bill of Rights” which never really got anywhere.

Tonight, Friday, the festival kicks off with an invitation-only movie by the French director who did Hiroshima, Mon Amour and then everyone is going over to the after party (which used to be at Tavern on the Green—not sure where it will be this year). If you’ve never gone to a festival, go try it out. Some of my favorites are always the documentaries, which often don’t get distribution in the theaters, but are usually incredibly interesting.

The 47th Annual New York Film Festival returns to the fully renovated Alice Tully Hall September 25 - October 11, 2009.
Festival Screenings: $20
Opening Night: $40
Centerpiece: $40
Closing Night: $40
>> Rush Tickets: $10; one hour before showtime on the day of performance 50 rush tickets will go on sale ~ limit two tickets per person.

Mara Manus just came from the Public Theater to run the Film Society and she’s doing some innovative things to try and make this more accessible than ever. There are $10 rush tickets. You get them one hour before the show. They are holding 50 tickets per show for rush.

On Saturday at 11am, they are introducing the digitally remastered Wizard of Oz in honor of the film’s 70th anniversary. They are expecting some very special surprise guests.

Ed’s Chowder House

The Empire Hotel is across from Lincoln Center. I always remembered it as kind of a sleepy hotel in a great location. Now, all of a sudden, it’s become a hot spot. They went through a complete rehaul and opened in June of last year. The last few weeks when I walk by, there’s a line out the door on the weekends and even some weeknights Part of the appeal is their rooftop lounge. We’ve been talking about how hot roof decks are with the Ravel in Long Island city and the Empire fits that bill. There’s also a rooftop pool deck with cabanas that you can rent for private parties. Of course, on weekends, there are cocktails and live DJ. And Tuesday night is jazz night. The roof is enclosed when the weather gets cold.

Now, a few weeks ago, Jeffrey Chodorow opened Ed’s Chowder House in the lobby. The chef is from the restaurant 81, near Central Park. The food is supposed to be “lobster shack” feel with lobster roll, oysters, chowder and fresh grilled fish. It’s supposed to be casual dining, although the dining room doesn’t seem so casual.

Marathon Miracle

In a previous blog, “A Runners Wife” I spoke about my husband training for the NYC marathon. All I have to say is that the months of training all came together of an amazing race. Race day is a grueling day for runners, and the family. But a miracle happened...

Pray for Us

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.

Great food matched with lovely wines

Here is a list of wines all from Spain, and menus from restaurants in Brooklyn where a crew of us  did a food / wine crawl through Carrol Gardens and Williamsburg recently
