So yesterday, as a present for my upcoming birthday, my dear friend devised a little surprise for me.
She told me to dress casual and to meet her at a specific location, but declined to tell me what exactly we would be doing. When we met up, she explained that we were going to be watching and participating in a cooking demonstration by famed chef David Bouley.
Now I am no "foodie", nor have I ever claimed to be a gourmet chef. To be honest, I usually cook on the basis of what ingredients I have around the house and how long it will take. The shorter the better, my friends. But getting to hear David's philosophy on food, and watching him so carefully construct such beautiful (and delectable) dishes, really made me think about putting more effort and thought into my recipes.
Not only did I get a few great tips like how to flash freeze chicken by first refrigerating it in a bag filled with ice to preserve the chicken's nutrients, I also got to taste every delicious creation along the way. From fresh shrimp preserved with rosemary oil, to slow poached salmon in red wine, my taste buds were delighted from start to finish.
More than anything it was such great fun to watch a master at his craft.
In a previous blog, “A Runners Wife” I spoke about my husband training for the NYC marathon. All I have to say is that the months of training all came together of an amazing race. Race day is a grueling day for runners, and the family. But a miracle happened...
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.
Here is a list of wines all from Spain, and menus from restaurants in Brooklyn where a crew of us did a food / wine crawl through Carrol Gardens and Williamsburg recently
