New York, NY -- You may have changed a light bulb or two in your home to the new energy efficient bulbs, but the MTA has you beat. They have changed all of the necklace lights on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to cost saving LEDs. The new lights use 30 watts of power and replace the old 100-watt mercury vapor bulbs. The agency says besides the energy reduction, the new bulbs will save on maintenance costs because the seven year life span is more than double that of the old bulbs. The MTA shelled out 187-thousand dollars to replace all 262 light fixtures. The next bridge to get the eco-friendly makeover is the RFK. The 190 light fixtures at the former Triborough Bridge are expected to be changed out by next summer.
