New Jersey governor candidates Chris Christie and Jon Corzine joined John Gambling this morning to discuss the last days of their campaigns.
“We’re going to put the pedal to the metal for the last 36 hours John,” Christie said.
A Public Policy Poll that came out early this morning put Christie 47-41 over Corzine. A six-point lead, Christie is optimistic about the governorship.
“I’m the change they’re going to vote for,” he said.
Christie promised to reduce spending, make the state competitive again, and to grow private sector jobs. He’s pushing for a smaller government, the expansion of the private industry, and a cut in taxes.
“I have a record of doing what I said I am going to do,” he said. Christie added that he has an absolute commitment to his principles.
Corzine on the other hand, is pushing for property tax rebates and expanded insurances. Corzine cited his past accomplishments, saying that the rate of growth under the Corzine administration has declined from 7.5% to 3.7% and that the rebate program under his administration has expanded more than ever before.
Corzine also wants to put more money in school and education. Christie, on the other hand, plans to keep the school funding level for the next year in order to help property taxes.
“People have enough of property taxes that continue to rise,” Christie added.
The candidates agreed on one thing—the increasing debt of the state of New Jersey. But when asked about the open space question number one, though both were advocates of purchasing open space, only one felt that doing so right now would help in the long run.
“We can’t afford not to do this,” Corzine told John, “We’re going to find a revenue source to pay for it. I think it will save public money in the long run.”
Christie, though an advocate for open space, said he was going to vote no. He pointed at the $400 million in debt and said, “We simply cannot endure any more debt on the back of our children and grandchildren.”
But despite Corzine's fall in recent polls, President Obama has been seen heavily supporting Corzine throughout the campaign.
To this Christie responded with: “There are a lot of things that the president and I agree on. The things we disagree on, we will disagree but not be disagreeable because we all have a constituency to serve.”
And now it’s up to the constituencies to choose which candidate they agree with.
In a previous blog, “A Runners Wife” I spoke about my husband training for the NYC marathon. All I have to say is that the months of training all came together of an amazing race. Race day is a grueling day for runners, and the family. But a miracle happened...
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the senate judiciary committee and basically shrugged when asked if any other enemy combatant captured overseas had ever been brought to civilian criminal court to face justice. Talk about an incompetent boob, not to mention a disgrace.
