The more people run away from New York Governor David Paterson the more I think we should embrace him. He seems to be all alone in his call for massive spending cuts and government restraint. His fellow Senate Democrats have said they will not go along with his call for $3.2 billion dollars in cuts. His call for cuts has already triggered hospital workers to run radio ads in opposition.
While it may seem like Governor Paterson is alone on an island, that might be a sign that he is making the right choices. His fellow democrats have shunned him, President Obama and the White House have suggested he step aside, party leaders seem to be embracing Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for Governor in 2010. It seems as if the Governor has lost all of his "special interest" support, but thats not such a bad break, those are the groups that will fight budget cuts and resist any pullback in government service.
So the Governor who took office by accident when Elliot Spitzer came undone as Client Number 9, may just accidentally find himself in a more powerful position where he will do right for New York taxpayers.
