The Speakeasy Museum of the City of New York
The Museum of the City of NY sometimes gets overlooked in favor of its neighbors further downtown, but it’s a lovely museum with a beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking Central Park.
Every Wednesday until August 18th, they are recreating the era of Prohibition with a Speakeasy on their terrace.
The website promotes it as a secret admission—the reality is that you arrive on Fifth avenue and immediately see the ticket table and terrace with people dancing and socializing.
So, there’s nothing hidden or secret about it, other than people may not think to go up to 103rd and Fifth avenue on a Wednesday night.
But, it is a very pleasant way to spend a hot summer evening.
There are drinks, swing dancing to a live band, and tours of the museum.
There were people dressed up in traditional 20’s style swing outfits dancing on the outdoor terrace. There are outdoor tables and chair set up and people mingling on the terrace and in the museum.
You can go on a free tour or wander through the museum. The current exhibits include something on Mayor John Lindsay and Japanese samurai visitors to NY.
Tickets are $15, $10 for members.
