Self Control

After consuming a bag of Hersey’s Chocolates  we recently did a story on self control.    We  all have been on a diet; we all have joined a gym.   We always swear we are going to do something, eventually.  But, temptation rears  its ugly head and self control gets thrown out the window.    I like these  six tips from Prevention Magazine.   Maybe,  these tips can help you  to walk away from the the ice cream and any other temptation that gets in your way.

1.   Play Offense: Proactively arrange your life and avoid problem situations..  Give yourself enough time to finish a project and if you on a diet steer clear of all you can eat buffets.

2.   Use The Calm Before It Storms: You can’t control or even predict the surprise stresses in life.  But the article says you may want to quit smoking, cut back on your drinking, or have that talk with your spouse during times of low demand in other parts of your life

3.   Don’t Procrastinate:

4.   Always Remember the Basics:   Eat right and get your sleep.   They say when you  feel your will power begins to flag, grab a handful of almonds or an apple and remember that getting your rest is just as important as good  nutrition.

5.   Put it in Writing: Keeping track of your progress is very important in any plan.

6.   Reward Yourself Well and Often:  Incentives can work wonders.

My Day at Skytop Lodge in the Poconos
What a wonderful trip to Skytop Lodge in the Poconos.  I had not been there in many year,
but I am so happy I made the trip back.  This is a place you all need to visit!

Of course I needed to stop before I made it to Skytop when I saw an antique
shop.  You never know when you will find a hidden treasure.

It was a very fast and easy drive from New York and less than 2 hours
I am instantly relaxed with the beauty of Skytop Lodge

What an athlete!  You can do just about any activity you could imagine, from
white water rafting, fishing, hiking, excersise classes...but ping pong is
my thing!

Mini Golf -- how adorable! No high-tech gadgets here to have fun. It was a kid's fantasy.

I alway find something to eat no matter where I am.  I found the
"The World's Best Milkshake"  - 5 scoops of ice cream in each one!

Who could resist this old fashioned ice cream and candy parlor?

Everywhere you look at Skytop, there are breathtaking gardens and beautiful vistas.

What a great place for a family gathering.  You can even have your own
cabin if you choose to stay outside of the main lodge.

No time to take advantage of this glorious golf course -- I almost ran
and jumped on someone else's cart!

I went on a beautiful morning walk -- trying to burn off the bacon from breakfast!
Breathing in that Pocono Air.

Having a ball chatting with all of the people who make up Skytop's family.
We're sitting on the South Terrace of this gorgeous old stone castle built in 1925.

Skytop Lodge is the perfect place for family reunions, weddings, getaways, corporate retreats, vacations, or just you taking a breather.  From playing golf to all water sports, going fishing and dogsledding and eating amazing food, Skytop has it all.

Worried about Terrorists
Think about this-  Meat can be contaminated ; chicken has arsenic; fruits and vegetables are covered with pesticides; hair products have Formaldehyde; Styrofoam coffee cups are dangerous;  sun blocks  have fake labeling and cell phones can give you brain cancer.  What’s a girl to do?    The best of the worst! -   Maybe we can go back to the Victory Gardens and raise our own livestock- not easy in a Manhattan apartment.

Broadway Shows for the Summer

Going to Broadway this summer?    Here are few shows worth the spending your money on.

Anything Goes- Sutton Foster is lively and terrific!

Baby It's You! - Has you dancing in the aisle

The Book of Mormon- Outrageously Funny- but if shocked by foul language and /or disrespect for religion – don’t go

Born Yesterday- with outstanding newcomer Nina Arianda – is fun

The Normal Heart- will bring you to tears

The Mother with the Hat- with Tony nominated Bobby Cannavale is a wonderfully written new work

War Horse – is visually the most dazzling show in town.

My Inside tips  for saving money on  Broadway  Shows:

  • Check out discouts codes on webs sites like: broadwayoffers.com, broadwaybox.com,.playbill.com,  and  .theatermania.com.
  • Buy directly from a theater box office, where you can also use a code for savings,  and you will avoid the fees that Telecharge and Ticketmaster slap on the tickets they sell online.
  • Go to .tdf.org for information on the three New York City TKTS booths, which offer same-day discounted tickets to dozens of Broadway and Off Broadway shows.

Mom’s Chopped Chicken Liver
Holidays are our persistence of memory. We often try to create and re-create what our parents and grandparents served to us. When I make my mother’s Chopped Chicken Liver – I always sense her presence. It has become my husband’s favorite

Sauté loads of thinly sliced onions (about 4 to 5 large ones) in schmaltz (chicken fat) for until golden caramelized.    Wash, pat dry and clean 1 lb. of chicken livers. Then place under a broiler for about 2 to 3 minutes.   Add broiled chicken livers to sautéed onions and sauté another until done. The chicken livers should not have any pink color-inside. Place mixture in a wooden bowl   with 2 hard boiled cold eggs and chop.   (You can use a food processor, but I love the texture of hand chopping) Salt and pepper to taste.
This is good old fashioned Jewish style chopped liver. I hope you enjoy! It is delicious!

Yes Virginia, there may be a cure for the common cold
For years we sucked on cold-zee, a zinc product, hoping it would ward off colds. Then we stopped after reading conflicting information about the effectiveness of zinc.  Our giant supply cold –zee’s sat  untouched, in our snack draw for years   Then  we read Tara Parker Poe in the New York Times, For Cold Virus, Zinc May Edge Out Even Chicken Soup.  She tells us about new reviews from Cochrane Collaboration, an international non- profit organization that evaluates medical research, in which they find that Zinc lozenges, tablets, and syrups if administered within 24 hours of onset of symptoms can reduces the severity and length of a cold and cough by days.  The studies used various doses and types of zinc including gluconate, the type of zinc in cold-zee’s, and zinc acetate lozenges which can be found on a website coldcure.com.   Go to well.blogs.nytimes.com.  for more information and to read the full article.

A Winter Escape
Just came home from a weekend at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach Florida. Getting there in a snow storm was no fun.    Because of weather, Jet Blue, the airline we were using cancelled our flight.   My husband received an automated message stating the cancellation.   At the end of the message were two phone numbers for more information.   Since trying all day, to get a live person he decided to call the phone number on the message which turned out to be the line for the hard of hearing. He got a loud human being who told him if he could come to the airport immediately- he could have the last two seats on the only flight going out. So off we went to the airport.

Once we got to Florida, the frost was on the pumpkin.  Temperature ranged from 40 to 60 degrees until the day of departure when it hit 70 degrees. Still, we had a good time dinner at my favorite restaurant, the Palm Beach Grill; played golf; visited relatives and had a very entertaining dinner with Elyse and Chuck W, a terrific couple we met on a WOR cruise. They were traveling on the cruise with their children and assorted relatives and friends.   We met them at Mar-A-Lago, Donald Trumps little palace, where people watching is a scene by itself. The International Red Cross Ball, a glittering social event was being held there that night, so 700 people dressed to the nines paraded in front of us. On the other hand very young leggy women in the shortest skirts you ever seen made there way into the dining room followed by “very elderly men in hot pursuit.   Praise the Lord for Viagra. We had lots of laughs and a good time was had by all.

If you can find the time to get down to Florida to escape this horrible winter there are some great deals around.   We were able to find flights from New York to West Palm on Jet Blue for as low as $199.00 round-trip. Even the Breakers has some good packages ($200 in Breaker rewards per night per room), as does the Chesterfield Hotel Palm Beach (3 nights for the price of two), and the Colony (a special rate including
breakfast, dinner and show).

I also clipped from The New York Times   a fantastic recipe for Saltine Cracker Brittle -Adapted from Kelly Mahoney-
“48 saltine crackers, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 pound unsalted butter,1 teaspoon vanilla,  and 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips.
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line a sheet pan or large cookie sheet with sides with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Arrange the crackers side by side in a single layer on the foil. In a small saucepan, melt the sugar and butter, stirring constantly until they bubble, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and quickly stir in the vanilla. Pour evenly over the crackers and, using a spatula, spread to cover evenly.
Bake immediately. After 7 minutes, remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the crackers. Return to the top rack of the oven and bake for 2 minutes more. Spread the chocolate evenly over the crackers with a clean spatula. Cool for 20 to 30 minutes before transferring the tray to the freezer. The next day, peel off the foil and break the brickle into pieces. Keep frozen or refrigerated. Yield: About 2 pound”.
Happy holidays!

Sadie

Fifteen and a half years ago, while on a llama hike in southern Vermont to celebrate a birthday, my husband handed me a large manila envelope.   Great, I thought!  He is giving me the parcel of land I had been coveting next to my property I envisioned a studio to write in etc. No land- instead a photo of a large white standard poodle puppy. “No More dogs “I said–last child was college bound - no one was home and who was going to take care of a puppy.  Despite my protests, 9 week old Sadie came home and into our hearts.   With her was a pink stuffed Octopus, a present from the breeder Carolyn O’ Rourke, which remained with her to the end.  She greeted you with it – she took it with her wherever she was and wherever she went.   Both Sadie and her toy became part of the fabric of our lives.   We fell in love and so did the neighborhood.   She would stand by our local homeless man- who swore she increased his business.  But most of all, she and my husband forged a bond that transcended any relationship he had ever had with a pet.  They went to the park before 7:00 o’clock every morning, becoming part of a dog group that included men and women of all ages.   Before long we were going to celebrations, weddings, and graduations  of park friends and pals.    Despite my mandate- no dog on the bed- Sadie slept nights with her paw across my husbands’ leg protecting him.   During thunderstorms she tried to get him to hide in the closet with her.   My non-cooking husband, poached chicken for her – and kosher chicken at that.   Every now and then for birthdays an organic chicken liver was put into the mix.

Sadie passed way a few weeks ago.   For Fifteen plus years this amazing dog gave us comfort, joy, and unconditional love.  She was never sick, out ran every lab on the beach, and it was only after her 15th birthday in June; she seemed to realize that she was over 100 years old in human terms.

Those of you with pets in your lives understand this sense of lose.  We miss you Sadie.

Travel tips for Venice and Greece from Joan

Here are a couple of thoughts for those who may by traveling to Venice and Greece.

We stayed at the Bauer II Palazzo Hotel phone: 39 041 520 7022.  We loved the hotel - perfect location, old world charm with every modern amenity.

Our favorite meal suggestions came from friends, the Plesser family,  who spend a month in Venice every year.

Lunch by the pool at Hotel Cipriani.  Sit in the  garden area and feast on fantastic pasta, incredible bread and more.   There is a Cipriani boat that goes back and forth from most hotels along the Grand canal.

Cipriani also has a top rated restaurant called Cips, famous for its pastas, pizzas, and views.

We also loved our lunch in the garden at Locando Cipriani, located on the little island, Torcello which is famous for its 11th century Church.

Da Fiore is considered by many to be the most delicious expensive restaurant in Venice.  You want to go to the one located in the San Polo district.

The best seafood meal we had was Corte Sconta.  Have prosecco with bubbles with your meal.

Near to Corte Sconta is Al Covo.  Say hello to the Venetian owner and his Texan wife and eat the fabulous fish.

Have an overpriced Bellini at Harry’s Bar.

And when you are in Santorini, see if you can get a reservation at the breathtaking hotel Perivolas- Highly recommended by journalist Linda Elerbee and good if love stairs and climbing.

Ralph Snodsmith
altText
A few days ago Ralph Snodsmith, host of The Garden Hotline, passed away.   Ralph had had an accident and developed serious complications from which there was no recovery.   I met Ralph when I was a young broadcaster.   He was then the director of the Queens Botanical Garden and knew more than most people when it came to nature’s miracles- trees, flowers, and the great outdoors.   When I started working at WOR Radio, I introduced Ralph to the powers that be.  The Garden Hotline was born.  It enjoyed over a 25 year run at this station with millions of listeners hanging on to Ralph’s every word.    Although I feel sad at the suddenness of Ralph’s passing, I take pleasure in the fact that Ralph Snodsmith loved his work, his life, his family and the listeners who inspired him.   His legacy will be one of beauty and permanence in the way he transformed the landscape.  Whatever time Ralph had, he made the most of it, and that is a lesson for all of us.  Seize the moment and try to make a difference.
