Chancellor Dennis Walcott on NYC Bus Strike

Dennis M. Walcott, Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, stopped by WOR710's The John Gambling Show to discuss the ongoing bus strike that the DOE is currently dealing with.

Today marks one week that the union has been on strike, impacting 152,000 students in public and non-public schools.  Chancellor Walcott explained that the DOE has put out a request for bids for new vendors  to provide bus service in order to save the city money.  Vendors are expected to respond by February 12th.

"We have a responsibility to our students, and also for the taxpayers, to make sure that any savings goes back to the schools," said Walcott. "We saved the city $95 million with the previous contact, and we hope to save that plus more with this next bid."
