Cuomo, Christie Call For Changes at Penn Station

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie have issued a joint letter calling on Amtrak to turn over control of Penn Station to a private operator.

“As Amtrak’s management of Penn Station continues to produce multiple failures, we believe systemic changes cannot wait.  A professional, qualified, private station operator must be brought in to take over the repairs and manage this entire process going forward,” they said in a letter.

A series of signal problems, disabled trains and a derailment at Penn Station have led to big problems.  Commuters have been forced to deal with delays and canceled trains in recent weeks.

“The situation at Penn Station has gone from bad to worse to intolerable.  Every commuter in the New York/New Jersey area agrees with us that drastic action must be taken to immediately remedy the situation,” the governors said.

Amtrak is planning major repair work at Penn Station during the summer.  That is expected to cause more delays for commuters.
