The NYPD has stepped up security around New York City after a bombing in Manchester, England that killed 22 people and injured 59 others.
Police Commissioner James O’Neill tweeted that the NYPD is “closely monitoring events in Manchester, England to determine any possible implications” for New York City. The department has sent heavy weapons teams to high profile locations and there will be random bag checks at transit hubs.
On Twitter, Mayor Bill de Blasio offered his prayers to the victims and their families. He repeated Commissioner O'Neill's statement that the NYPD is closely monitoring the situation.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has also ordered state law enforcement officials to increase security and patrols at key locations, including airports, bridges, tunnels and mass transit systems. He also offered his condolences to the victims.
“I am both shocked and heartbroken by the horrific explosion at the Manchester Arena in England. This apparent act of terrorism, targeting a concert attended by thousands of teenagers and young people, is an inexplicable and abhorrent assault on our universal values as human beings,” Cuomo said in a statement.
