Mayor Bill de Blasio is in danger of losing control of New York City’s school system.
The state legislature went home last night without voting to extend mayoral control, which has been in place since Michael Bloomberg was in office. At the end of the month, control will revert back to 32 school boards.
Leaders of the State Senate and Assembly blamed each other for failing to approve an extension.
“The Assembly needlessly tied renewal of mayoral control to dozens of unrelated local tax extenders requested by counties to fund important services for their residents,” Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan said.
Leaders in the Assembly criticized the State Senate for including a plan to allow for the expansion of charter schools as part of a measure to extend mayoral control.
Mayor de Blasio had pushed strongly for an extension, saying it has improved graduation rates and reduced the number of students dropping out.
