Joe Lhota is returning to his old job.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has again appointed Lhota as MTA chairman, at a time when the agency is dealing with an increasing number of delays and other problems.
“Joe Lhota is a tested and experienced leader with the proven track record needed to address the enormous challenges facing the nation’s largest mass transportation system,” Governor Cuomo said.
Lhota received widespread praise for getting the subway system back up and running quickly after Superstorm Sandy. Lhota then left the MTA to run for mayor in 2013. He won the Republican nomination, but lost in the general election.
“This is an incredibly challenging time for the MTA and we will immediately and aggressively tackle the problems the system is facing after decades of disinvestment,” Lhota said.
Lhota will receive a salary of $1 per year and will delegate CEO duties to a permanent Executive Officer. A search is continuing to fill that position.
