Schumer Criticizes Amtrak Plan to Reduce Legroom

Senator Chuck Schumer is criticizing Amtrak for a plan to create a new economy class on trains that would reduce legroom for riders.

Schumer said Amtrak is taking an idea from the airlines by shrinking the seats.  He said the railroad should find other ways to make money.

“Amtrak should not throw out one of the best things about Amtrak and train travel – that is you at least get a seat you can sit in and be comfortable in,” Schumer said.

This comes as Amtrak continues emergency repairs at Penn Station, resulting in the so-called “Summer of Hell.” Service has been disrupted on Long Island Railroad and NJ Transit until repairs are complete on September 1.
