NYC Having Safest Year on Record

Mayor Bill de Blasio says through the first seven months of the year, New York City is having the safest year on record.

“We've talked a lot before and I like to repeat it because it's true, New York City is the safest big city in America,” de Blasio said.

Major crime is down 8.1 percent from last July, while shootings and murders have both fallen more than 17 percent.  De Blasio credits community policing, saying it’s created an alliance between officers and the communities they service.

“Every borough – as the Mayor said, every borough of New York City is down in crime at this point in the year, and very important, every category of index crime from murder to property crimes is down,” Deputy Commissioner of Operations Dermot Shea said.
